Pierre et Gilles, Pierre Commoy and Gilles Blanchard, are French artists and romantic partners. They produce highly stylized photographs, building their own sets and costumes as well as retouching the photographs. Their work often features images from popular culture, gay culture including pornography (especially James Bidgood), and religion.

Pierre et Gilles belong to the most influential artists of our time. In their complex, intricate pictures they portray artistic history, break and play skillfully with old, established moral boundaries and societal stereotypes. Their photographic and pastoral masterpieces unfold a captivating power you cant escape.

The two artists have lived and worked together since 1976. Influenced by Pop Art, Gilles first created a photograph of Pierre in 1977. This mixture of photography and painting became their hallmark, which until today has remained individual and distinctive.

In the last 30 years, Pierre et Gilles have protraited many celebrities, among whom are Marc Almond, Mareille Mathieu, Catherine Deneuve, Serge Gainsbourg, Iggy Pop, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Nina Hagen, Madonna, Jeff Stryker and Paloma Picasso.

Pierre et Gilles è la firma collettiva usata dalla coppia di artisti francesi formata dal fotografo Pierre Commoy (La Roche-sur-Yon, 1950) e dal pittore Gilles Blanchard (Le Havre, 1953)

Dopo che Gilles completò i suoi studi artistici a Le Havre, i due si trasferirono a Parigi nello stesso anno, il 1973. Pierre lavorò per qualche giornale, ma fu solo dal 1976, anno del loro incontro, che cominciarono una vita comune.

Sono famosi per le loro fotografie ritoccate con la pittura, che realizzano assieme fin dal loro incontro. Queste opere affrontano i temi della cultura pop, gay (compresa la pornografia) e temi religiosi (con una rappresentazione di San Sebastiano), e fanno l’uso deliberato e cosciente del kitsch che è tipico dell’estetica camp. Pierre e Gilles definiscono così la loro ricerca artistica:

« Ci piace idealizzare, ma parliamo anche di morte, mistero ed estraneità della vita. Nelle nostre immagini c’è tanta dolcezza quanta violenza… »
